Couch to 5K - Week 3 Day 1 7/20/11

Back on track...

And they say that a hero could save us
I'm not gonna stand here and wait
I'll hold on to the wings of the eagles
Watch as we all fly away

from the Spiderman soundtrack)

Wednesday's stats:
weight:  211.4 lbs
workout:  18 minutes (2 reps, run 1:30, walk 1:30, run 3:00, walk 3:00)
distance covered: 1.54 miles (2.48 km)
total miles run: 13.57 miles (21.73 km)
money raised in Travis' name: $100.00

Before I tell you about my run, let me introduce you to my family....

This is Vivian (9 y.o.), my wife Lina, and Nicole (7 y.o).  This was one of our family Christmas pictures (obviously).  I love this picture!!

Anyway, about the workout today...

I did the run in the evening because I didn't get up in time to do it before work.  As I may have mentioned before, I'm doing Herbalife products as part of this running program.

The run felt good, but the 3 minute run intervals were a little tough.  I got through them.  I did tape up my left shin and it felt fine.  Now my knees are giving me problems.  They hurt a little, but I'm going to run through the pain.

When I downloaded the information from my GPS watch, I found out that I didn't meet the distances recommended in the training program.  You se the program had intervals at 1:30 or 200 yards and 3:00 or 400 yards.  I was short on both.  Next workout, I'm going to try doing it for distance.  I'm going to do that because  my goal is to do the distance (5K or 10K).  I need to train at distance, not so much time.  I want to finish the races I going to do.

Well, that's another day, another workout.....

My goal is to finish the Marine Corps Marathon 10K in October, and I'm doing this in remembrance of 1Lt. Travis Manion, USMC.
"If not me, then who..."

I joined Team Travis for the MCM 10K and I ask that you please take the time to donate to the Travis Manion foundation and sponsor my run, click here.  If you want to send a check to donate, this link will help.

Let's start off with the fact that I didn't get up at 5AM to do this run...

It felt okay.  I taped up my shins this time.  That kept me from having so much pain.  Now I just have to work on my endurance...

Couch to 5K - Week 2 Day 2 7/15/11

Looking for a reason
Roaming through the night to find
My place in this world
My place in this world
Not a lot to lean on
I need Your light to help me find
My place in this world
My place in this world
(from "A Place in This World"
by Michael W. Smith)

Friday's stats:
weight:  212.2 lbs
workout:  20-minute easy workout (6 reps, 1:30 run, 2:00 walk)
distance covered: 1.62 miles (2.59 km)
total miles run: 10.35 miles (16.56 km)
money raised in Travis' name: $100.00

I missed getting up in time to do this run in the morning, so I did it in the late evening.  Point is...I did it.

At the beginning of most of my posts, I put the words from a song.  Some of them are from my iPod and some are just songs that I like.  In any case, the words say something to me.  My iPod has a eclectic mix of music.  I have songs from Usher to Nickelback, but no country...except for Lady Antebellum.  I promise to show you my playlist at another time.  One thing did become apparent to me this on this run, I need better music.  Picture this, you're running, struggling to keep your feet moving and Jordin Sparks is singing about "no air."  Great song, but not very motivating.  I've got to change my list...

Well, about the run...  I did it. But as I wrote about on Wednesday, the shin splints hurt really bad.  They keep me from finishing all of my reps.  I'm going to find a taping method that will help.  I finished the workout the best I could.   I felt good about the run.  This is becoming a part of my lifestyle now.

Out of curiousity, I blew into a flowmeter I found around the house.  The flowmeter is for me to tell how my asthma is affecting my lung capacity.  I got  a reading that was higher than I've seen in the last two months.  If nothing else, my lung capacity is getting better from running.  I'll take whatever benefits I can get.

Next, I want to get more weight loss.  I'm fighting my insulin in that respect.  Insulin makes you gain weight and I've leveled off.  If I can reduce my need for the insulin, the weight should also reduce more.  I need to get my nutrition in line with the Herbalife and by cutting out the other sugars. and starches.  We can discuss how I'm eating in a future blog.

Here's a picture of me before my run.  My youngest daughter took it...

Oh, by the way, I got an email today from Charm City Run.  They're a great running shoe store in the Baltimore Metro area.  The email was for the 9/11 "Run to Remember" in Baltimore.  That is going to be my test run at the end of this program.  It benefits the police and firefighters.

Also, there is a run on 9/18 in Baltimore. It called the Fort McHenry 5K Tunnel Run.  This benefits Special Olympics.

I plan to run in both...

Then the Marine Corps Marathon 10 in October and...

the Rothman 8K in Philadelphia (my hometown) in November during the Philly Marathon weekend.

It seems that running is my "thing" now.

Well, let's remember...

My goal is to finish the Marine Corps Marathon 10K in October, and I'm doing this in remembrance of 1Lt. Travis Manion, USMC.
